When this work was first published in the eleventh issue of the Beijing Literary Art in 1979, it was the subject of a fierce debate involving not only Chinese literary circles, but also foreign critics in various fields and abroad. This paper is a comprehensive examination and analysis of the controversy over this work, resulting in (1) social issues, (2) ethical issues, (3) subject matter, and (4) other issues of "foresight" and "arrogance".
The novel was the winner of the National Award for Excellence in Short Fiction, published in the July 1979 edition of the Craftsman Daily. The modeling of the human figure is the main artistic means of reflecting reality. In this work, the form of the human figure is of the greatest importance, not to mention the style and structure. This thesis will investigate how the theme of the novel's title is developed and constructed by the conflicts of the characters in the novel, divided into three plots.
